I don't know of a better place to start, but if there is one I will
appreciate being directed.

I am about to begin a project of digitializing a lot of slides. B&W negs
and Color negs.
I want a app, something like a data base in which to store them. I need
searchable fields, e.g., Date; (dd/mm/yy); subject; place; and notes.
Does such an application exist?

We use Portfolio/Portfolio Server from Extensis
<http://www.extensis.com/en/products/asset_management.jsp>, and a lot
of people swear by iView MediaPro
<http://www.iview-multimedia.com/products/mediapro/index.php>.

You could try Iview MediaPro as a possible start. I am a satisfied user,
no connection with the company.

Michael-

I would check into the FileMaker data base program. If it has the ability
to include photos, it may meet your needs.

If you don't find a satisfactory data base program, you might also take a
look at Genealogy programs. Several are available that provide the
ability to include photos, and text fields are searchable.

I used iView Media Pro until their price tag hit the stratosphere. If
you make money from your pictures, it may be worth it, but take a look
at Shoebox by KavaSoft <http://www.kavasoft.com/>. For much less money
they provide a very nice photo management tool.

Isn't that the sort of organising that iPhoto is intended to do? At
least, if you don't have too many photos.

After you have added Titles and Comments, and put locations in Comments,
the regular Spotlight search routines in Tiger may be enough locate
everything, using Smart Folders. Comment (kMDItemComment) finds iPhoto
comments. Title (kMDItemTitle) finds Titles. Rating
(kMDItemStarRating) finds the rating you gave each photo. There are a
bunch of Date routines, although I'm not sure which one finds the dates
photos were taken. Doing a fairly complex search isn't all that hard,
once you figure out what search term pulls out which part of the photo
meta information. You could experiment with a handful of photos to see
whether a bunch of Smart Folders would do the job.

On the other hand, I must admit to having problems with the Keywords
facility in Smart Folders.

Thanks for the comments. I've played around with iPhoto. Documentation
seems limited and searching even more so, though I must admit that the
"secrets" of any app are not always evident.
The other matter is I will eventually have 3,000 or more in file, from
what I've been told that would exceed iPhoto's cap.

It would be too much for early versions of iPhoto; however, I currently
have almost 12000 photos in an iPhoto database on an 800MHz G4 iMac
with "only" 768MB of RAM and it works fine in iPhoto 5 (did in iPhoto 4
as well).

Searching is limited within iPhoto. You can just use Smart Folders
within it, and change the search criteria as you need it. The change is
pretty much instant.

Or use Smart Folders in Finder as I mentioned via Spotlight. Do you
have Tiger?

That would have been the limit for iPhoto 2, not the current versions.
What version of iPhoto do you have?

Apple say the limit is 25,000 photos. I have around 6500, without
problems in iPhoto 4.

You should however note that photos from some cameras (Casio, Kyocera,
Pentax, some Konica Minolta, some Nikon) do not get along well with
iPhoto 5. There are workarounds for this. (Some cameras create an
excessively large MakerNote in their exif data).
